The best-staffed hospitals have 70 doctors per 100 beds Death rates 'linked to number of doctors'
THE number of doctors at a hospital is directly related to its mortality rate, according to an analysis of Department of Health figures.
The best-staffed hospitals have 70 doctors per 100 beds, seven times as many as the worst staffed units, the data to be published in a new guide to hospitals reveals.
And Prof Sir Brian Jarman, of Imperial College School of Science, Technology and Medicine, who analysed the Government figures, said they showed a linked variation in mortality rates of as much as 50 per cent between hospitals. He said: 'If hospitals are keen on reducing death rates, they should employ more doctors.' Regards
