| SHORT REPORT I saw a 55-year-old lady in the clinic today with long history of IBS. She reported worsening symptoms especially urgency. I did rectal examination (PR) and felt a large polyp at 5 cm level with blood on the tip of my finger. The family doctor failed to do PR examination and therefore missed this vital finding which can be serious. Lesson to be learnt: When I was a medical student I learnt from Baily and Love Surgical Book this quote: If you do not put you finger in it (rectal examination) you will put you foot in it!! So please remember PR is a must in lower GI symptoms especially if the patient is 50 plus. Best wishes Dr Philip Hardo |
