IQE Part A exam, April 2006 questions

These are a few questions that were asked in the Part A exam at Guy's on 3rd April 2006

PAPER 1

N1)Trigeminal nerve-

There were some questions like where is the nucleus situated,etc.

N2) Which nerve is responsible for transmitting sensations of taste , pain and heat from the oral cavity?

N3) During anaesthesia of the upper incisor , ________ superior _________ ___________ is given to block terminal branches of _________ nerve. Many optins were given for each blank.1st 2 blanks are name of the block, then 3rd blank was type( block , intraligamentary, intraosseous etc)

N4) If while anaesthesing the lower molars, the injection soln is placed too far posteriorly, which nerve will be anaesthetised?

N5) Picture of a radiograph was shown with a horizontally impacted 3rd molar and adjacent 2 molars.
Questions were -

a) type of impaction shown

b) What was the patient's complaint when radiograph was taken
( options were caries in 1st molar, proximal caries in some molar, pericoronitis etc .)

c) The patient was complaining when the radiograph was taken ? why
( options were radiograph touching soft palate, displacement of mylohyoid, or medial pterygoid, hypersalivation etc.)

d)What was wrong with the radiograph
(options were conecut, apices of 3rd molar not seen , horizontal angulation was wrong etc)

e) which 2 nerves are anaesthesised? Of which nerve are these 2 nerves branches

f) which muscle fibres affected when buccal mucoperiosteal flap raised

N6) picture of squamous cell ca of tongue was shown
Questions were what is ur diagnosis
appearance of the lesion (ulcerated, indurated , etc

N7) Some questions abt physio, dont remember correctly. it was fill in the blanks abt the effects of exercise on heart rate etc

N8) lots of questions on biostats none of which made sense

N9) a fill in the blank question on the origin of masseter muscle, which part of the muscle arises from the anterior 2-3rds of the lower surface of zygomatic bone?and the artery supply to masseter.

N10) dosages and administration of aspirin and paracetamol.

N11) thickness of periodontal ligament and types of fibres.

N12) What type of mucosa in the coronal part of the root of central incisor, what type of epithelium, how is it attached to bone. Same question again on apical part of the incisor

N13)which papillae on tongue dont have taste buds


PAPER 2

N1)lots of conditions were given and we had to choose the causative organism from a drop down menu.

a) most common microorganism causing food poisoning
b) something abt its enterotoxin.
c) Elek test

N2) Drugs used in TB and their side effects.

N3) Other drugs and side effects like Gentamicin, drug causing psuedomembranous colitis , etc.

N4) Lots of questions abt a pt with Diabetes Mellitus. , what time appointment etc.

N5) In which conditions is aspirin contraindicated

N6) Which drug enhances effects of warfarin? ( 5 options to choose from

N7) some questions abt an edentulous patient, 8 options were given abt maxillary and mandibular edentulous ridges and we had to choose the 5 correct answers.Abt buccal frenum, muscles affecting denture fit, retromandibular area, buccal shelf area etc.

N8) Lots of questions on Crohn's disease ( which cells seen, type of inflammation, affects which part of bowel.)

N9) questions on cells seen in TB

N10) Lots of clincal scenarios were given and what special treatment would u give ? eg :- in patient with infective endocarditis, pregnant pt., pt with previous history of rheumatic fever, etc

N11) Signs and symptoms of the patients were given , we had to come to a diagnosis.
a lady who is still breastfeeding her baby after a year , her MCV value and Hamoglobin values given, A 19 year old girl with pallour, and bruising over joints, A 19 year old boy With WBC count given
A 36 year old lady staying in a rundown place

the question was : diagnose the disease

N12) questions abt swellings in the midline or on the neck . options were branchail cyst, lipoma , thyroglossal cyst, goitre etc.

N13) Types of respiratory epithelium. and some more fill in the blank questions abt types of cells seen.

N14)a question abt myocarial infarction and what happens, atherosclerosis leads to what etc. it was a fill in the blank question
