Advantages

detection of peritoneal disease that is difficult by any other technique
Useful in detecting hepatopancreatobiliary cancers
Lesions that failed to be detected by imaging are more likely to be peritoneal metastasis or superficial liver tumors
management of suspected appendicitis in a pregnant woman
Patient go back to work earlier (quicker recovery)
lesser complications like adhesions
less exposure of body cavity to atmosphere

Disadvantages

Limitation in the evaluation of posterior extension (invasion)
The operations takes longer time
costs more
pneumoperitonium may provoke cardiac arrhythmia

Contraindications

severe obstructive airways disease
ischemic heart disease
cases that predispose to bleeding which are:

a. cirrhosis
b. coagulation defects
c. inflammatory disorders like acutecholecystitis and diverticulitis

Difficulties

in very obese patient, peeumoperitonium may be difficult and standard instrumentation may be too short
in very thin patient, there is difficulty in access
Laparoscopy is inserted by either of two ways:

open
closed
