A b s t r a c t :
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of smoking among
dentists in the public health sector of Kuwait and their attitudes towards
tobacco use cessation activities in the clinical setting. A self administered
questionnaire was distributed by hand, office and messenger mail to 400
government dentists. The response rate was 51% (204/400), 70% of
respondents were males, 22% were of Kuwaiti origin. Twenty-three percent
of all respondents were current smokers, while 58% of Kuwaiti dentists
were current smokers. Twelve percent of the dentists were ex-smokers.
Eighty-eight percent agreed on the need for dentists to quit smoking,
while 91% agreed to the need for office intervention activities. However,
only 16% of dentists ‘routinely’ advised their patients of the adverse
effects of smoking. Estimates from this survey indicate that a significant
proportion of dentists are smokers in Kuwait, more so with Kuwaiti dentists,
and that tobacco control activities are not a routine part of the dental
practice
