Course Introduction
Anatomy for the Dancer
The study of human anatomy is very complex and includes the study of multiple body systems. For the purposes of this course the focus will be on two major body systems and their relationship to function.

The skeletal system, the bony structure, provides the framework for all other body systems. The bones form the underpinnings that give the body stability. The joining of bones to form joint articulations allows for motion in the skeletal structure. The skeleton alone produces no motion. The motion of the body comes from the muscular system.

The muscular system also has many complex components. This course will focus on contractile muscles that produce active motion across joints, as is needed for movement. This produces the dynamic component of body motion. There are other areas of study in human anatomy, such as the integumentary system, the organ systems, the pulmonary systems to name a few. Although these are important for the functioning of the human body, they are less crucial for the dancer. The dancer must understand how bone and muscle work in harmony to produce the complex movements used each day by the dancer.



In order to integrate anatomical knowledge with the structure and function of dance motion, one must begin where all anatomical instruction begins. All study of anatomy uses the same terminology, so one must begin there in order to understand the specific structure and function study content that will follow in subsequent units of this course.

The study of dance is closely allied with understanding body structures as an underpinning to movement forms the dancer will be exploring both in technique and creative endeavors. Proper alignment of bones in relation to gravity, is a key principle in efficient movement. The study of anatomy further refines the dancer's understanding of the body's structure and function as it relates to the performance of dance technique.
