| Medical training in the UK The priority is for EU doctors so it is getting very hard for an overseas doctor to get a job in the UK. I advise any one who plans to come to the UK to be eligible for the GMC registration before they come here. This can be done by sitting and passing the PLAB test after getting 7 in the IELTS exam. All information about registration route are on the GMC web site ( http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/index.asp) Living in the UK is very expensive and it will be very disappointing for you and your family if you come here and were not able to achieve anything. This happen more often these days as legislations have changed a lot. If you are eligible for GMC registration, you can also try to apply for jobs through the bmj web site (http://careers.bmj.com/careers/welcome.html). You can also try through a locum agency and ask a friend here in the UK if you can put their address for correspondence. Many things can also be done through e-mails. I have seen people coming here to try to sit for the IELTS exam. Please do not do this as you will waste lots of both your money and time. You must sit the IELTS back home ( in Syria). So I must say studying/working in the UK is not an impossible mission but it’s becoming much much harder now a day. Best of Luck Basma Manchester |

| New Registration Framework for Doctors 2008 Hi I couldn't find on the GMC web site any new regulation with regard to acheive 7.5 in each of the four component of the IELTS. However I found that so many new rules are underway some has started on Feb 2008 and some will start on April and May 08. All these news are on the GMC website. http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/index.asp New immigration rules for international medical graduates New immigration rules that will restrict international medical graduates’ access to UK postgraduate medical training were announced by the Department of Health on 6 February 2008. The new rules start to take effect from 29 February 2008 .They will not impact on recruitment until 2009 and will prohibit the following people from accessing post graduate medical training posts: From 29 February • Migrants from overseas who are applying to the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) • Migrants already in the UK who are applying to switch to Tier 1 (General) From 1 April 2008 • Migrants in India who are applying for entry clearance as a Tier 1 (General) Migrant. The following people will be exempt from the regulations: • Those who currently have leave to remain in the UK as a Highly Skilled Migrant • Postgraduate doctors or dentists who are seeking leave to remain as a Tier 1 (General) Migrant. These changes to the immigration rules are expected to reduce the potential pool of new migrant applicants by between 3,000 to 5,000 in 2009. You can read more about this on the Department of Health website. Borderline Group scoring method introduced to PLAB Part 2 exam From May 2008 the PLAB Part 2 exam will be standard set using the Borderline Group scoring method. This is an internationally recognised method of standard setting and it ensures that exams are of a consistent standard over time. More details will follow. Increase in the Annual Retention Fee The GMC’s fees to doctors will rise in April 2008 for the first time in six years. The new fee levels will be £135 for provisional registration; £390 for full registration; and £390 for retention and restoration to the register. The threshold for eligibility for the lower income discount will increase to £21,391. Read more about the increase to the Annual Retention Fee and how the GMC is striving to improve its economy, efficiency and effectiveness. New Registration Framework for Doctors The GMC introduced a new registration framework on 19 October 2007. Key changes include the abolition of limited registration and the introduction of approved practicesettings. Read about the New Registration Framework. Changes to the way Certificates of Good Standing are issued Read about changes to the way that Certificates of Good Standing are issued. New Registration Framework for Doctors(19 October 2007) The GMC introduced a new registration framework on 19 October 2007. The changes have implications for all doctors new to full registration and those who employ or contract with them. Key features include the abolition of limited registration and the introduction of approved practice settings. The aim is to assure public protection and equality of treatment for doctors – and to make our registration system clearer for patients and employers. Contents
The cornerstone of the GMC’s new registration framework, introduced on 19 October 2007, was the abolition of limited registration. This category of registration previously applied only to international medical graduates (IMGs). The new framework of provisional and full registration applies equally to all doctors, no matter where they qualify. The new registration framework is part of the GMC’s continuing programme of reform and will assure both patient safety and equality of treatment for doctors. It will also mean greater clarity for anyone who needs to consult the register. How does the New Registration Framework affect doctors? The new registration framework has implications for all doctors new to full registration: UK and EEA graduates as well as IMGs. UK graduates and IMGs who are new to full registration and taking up a new job, or restoring their names to the register after a prolonged absence from practice, are required to work within a practice setting (APS) approved by the GMC as suitable for doctors new to full registration. We strongly advise EEA graduates to ensure they too work in an APS when they first take up employment in the UK under full registration. We also advise EEA doctors restored to the register after prolonged absence from UK practice to work initially in an APS. Approved practice settings (APS) An APS is one which has systems for the effective management of doctors, systems for identifying and acting upon concerns about doctors’ fitness to practise, systems to support the provision of relevant training or continuing professional development, and systems for providing regulatory assurance. This will also help ensure that, in the small number of cases where problems arise, there are systems in place which are capable of detecting them early. For more information read our guidance on approved practice settings. UK graduates and doctors applying for restoration can read more information in New Registration Framework for Doctors: What it means for the Registration of UK Graduates and Doctors Returning to the Register (December 2007) (132kb, pdf). International medical graduates (IMGs) IMGs are now able to apply direct for provisional or full registration. They still need to satisfy rigorous criteria before this is granted, but no longer need an offer of employment beforehand. Whether they apply for provisional or full registration depends on the nature and extent of their postgraduate experience. If they have satisfactorily completed either Foundation Year 1 in the UK or a period of postgraduate clinical experience (for example, an overseas internship) that provides an acceptable foundation for future practice as a fully-registered medical practitioner, they can apply for full registration. If they have not, they may apply for provisional registration. Doctors who meet the criteria for full registration are not eligible for provisional registration. New criteria for registering IMGs IMGs applying for either provisional or full registration need to meet rigorous criteria. They are required to satisfy the GMC that:
Please see the guidance on applying for registration. Best wishes to all Basma |
